Bitter:Sweet–now helmed by singer-songwriter and founding member Shana Halligan–makes a powerful return with comeback album Baby Is Back out today, April 25. The new album is the band’s first since 2010’s The Break Up EP, and it is a thrilling evolution and spiritual homecoming for the Los Angeles band. Created primarily in collaboration with producer Verskotzi, along with additional cuts from producers Tony Esterly, and D R M S, the album conveys a strong message, affirming that frontwoman Shana Halligan is firmly in charge. The album blends electronic music, jazz, and influences from classic Hollywood soundtracks, enriching the band’s unique sound.

“I’ve been able to choose the collaborators and producers I want to work with shaping the exact sound I want,” explains Shana. Talking more in depth about the album, she adds, “The album is a total blend and evolution from where Bitter:Sweet started to where electronic music is now. I have made it a point to look for producers who could take the cinematic, nostalgic, playfully sultry flavor of my work and bring in today’s sonic landscape, integrating many new sounds and emotion. The band’s music has always been about freedom, vibrancy, and limitless creativity. The new album takes that even further.”

Alongside the release comes “Ecoute Ma Voix” – a uniquely sensual track that has Shana stepping outside of her comfort zone as a performer. The English translation of the title means “Listen to My Voice.” Meant for a club setting, aimed at someone you hope to connect with that night ,not solely based around physical attraction; it also includes the idea of truly immersing yourself in someone and being seen and felt for who you are. There is sensuality within all of us. The song comes alongside a remix from tech house artist EBEN.

The album’s title track, the electrifying single “Baby Is Back” reintroduced Shana’s Bitter:Sweet at the top of the year. Since its release, it has been building at non-commercial radio, chalking up KCRW’s Top Tune of the Day and a band performance on 88.5 FM’s The SoCal Sound Sessions. The track has also been added to multiple in-store playlists including Kiehls and is in rotation with Lemmele and AMC movie theatres nationwide. “With the release of “Baby Is Back,” Bitter:SWEET introduces a fresh dynamic to their sound,” shared MXDWN. “The track blends vibrant energy with a nod to old Hollywood and James Bond soundtracks, merging timeless influences with modern sensibilities.”

Baby Is Back includes more personal and raw tracks like “Rise” written in the final days before her father’s passing (GRAMMY-winner and Blood, Sweat and Tears founder Dick Halligan). With its hauntingly beautiful string arrangement from Serj Tankian of System Of A Down, Galore stamped the ballad “… a deeply emotional track that will melt even the coldest of hearts.” Also included isthe adventurous dark, electronic “Rosary,” the brooding “Lover’s Waltz,” written with Tony Esterly (SIA, Mae Muller) and the bombastic fun banger “Roaring 21.”
